Opera Download Manager

Released November, 1998

Opera Download Manager — is a part of Opera Internet browser. Includes BitTorrent client and advanced features, such as pause and resume download. One of the neat features of Opera is that download starts as soon as you click on the link, even if user chooses “Save”, and spends time selecting the location for download, Opera already downloads the file in temporary location, so that when user is done, part of the file is already downloaded thus saving time.

Works great as a built-in browser download manager with some more advanced features like pausing/resuming and stopping/restarting. Love Opera’s feature that download starts as soon as I click while I may be meddling with where to put it. I choose it over any modern browsers’ download manager (or lack thereof) any day.

However, BitTorrent client is very basic and not very resource-efficient (especially in early versions), can slow down machine and hog whole network bandwidth for no apparent reason. While I liked the idea of torrent client being integral part of my Internet suite, implementation is not quite so good yet, so I prefer µTorrent.
