Aqua Globes
$15.00
Released January, 2009
The Pros:Easy to use. Keeps temperamental plants alive: prevents under-watering or over-watering. Easy to tell when it needs more water.
The Cons:Nuisance to refill through the thin shaft.
Aqua Globes keep plants watered, especially temperamental ones. These are blown glass, and come in various colors.
Using it is pretty simple: make a hole in the soil with a small stick, fill the globe with water, then stick it into the soil.

The principal it uses is that water tension in the small amount of soil plugging the shaft prevents air from entering the bulb. However, as the soil dries out air is able to enter thus allowing the water to flow downward and wetting the soil again. In this way, a feedback loop is created to regulate the amount of water the plant receives.

Travelling Matt:
#aqua_globes Usually, i don't give much credibility to "as seen on TV" products - but this one is different. I decided to pick it up at a local retailer and give it a try. Since, i've bought 8 or 10 for various house plants.
It is especially effective on herbs (e.g. basil, oregano), and a hot pepper plant. Before this, i'd killed lots of these. Now, these are all thriving! It even has enough water for a a couple of weeks away for travel.
